A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills.

Sejak Jaws (1974) arahan sineas kondang Steven Spielberg coba saja sebut film bergenre sejenis yang relatif berkualitas? Nyaris tidak ada. Sekuel Jaws masih memiliki taring yang cukup menggigit namun setelahnya nyaris tak ada lagi. Deep Blue Sea (1999) walau terbilang lumayan namun hingga kini pun tidak pernah disebut-sebut. Sementara sang sineas, spesialis aksi thriller, Jaume Collet-Serra, yang tiga film terakhirnya berkolaborasi bersama aktor gaek, Liam Nesson (Unknown, Nonstop, Run All Night) kali ini mencoba menjajal genre “serangan hiu” ini. Hasilnya pun ternyata jauh dari buruk.

Alkisah Nancy yang trauma setelah kematian sang ibu berlibur di Mexico dan menjajal pantai rahasia tempat dimana ibunya pernah berselancar disini. Bersama dua pemuda lokal Nancy berselancar dengan penuh suka cita hingga seekor hiu putih besar merusak acara mereka. Nancy terjebak di sebuah batu karang kecil yang cukup jauh dari pantai dan ia harus mencari cara sebelum air pasang menggenangi batu karang tersebut.

Plotnya sangat sederhana dan intinya hanya bagaimana agar Nancy bisa bertahan hidup dan lolos dari situasi tersebut. Momen demi momen disajikan secara efektif tanpa mengurangi rasa ketegangan kisahnya. Tak ada yang dilebih-lebihkan, semuanya berjalan wajar dan natural. Beberapa momen memang terasa agak membosankan namun terbayar melalui segmen klimaks yang menegangkan. Hal yang menarik tampak di awal film yang menggambarkan secara nyata dan detil proses berselancar dari menggosok papan hingga berselancar di tengah gulungan ombak laut. Penonton seolah benar-benar dibawa ikut dan menikmati berselancar seperti halnya Nancy.

Sejak awal sudah terlihat jika sang sineas menggunakan banyak pendekatan sinematik yang unik. Shot close up terlihat lebih dominan ketimbang shot jauh sehingga semakin mendekatkan kita secara personal dengan karakter Nancy. Teknik superimpose rasanya kini sudah amat jarang dipakai namun dalam beberapa adegan yang melibatkan komunikasi via handphone cukup efektif digunakan dan sangat menarik secara visual. Terakhir, walau tak sekuat score Jaws namun ilustrasi musiknya cukup lumayan untuk menambah suasana ketegangan.

The Shallows memang bukan Jaws namun film thriller ini secara efektif mampu mengobati rasa rindu terhadap sub genre (serangan hiu) sejenis. Dengan konsep minimalis film ini mampu memberikan ketegangan cerita secara maksimal. Sisi drama pun juga sangat baik menyatu dengan kisahnya, sang ibu memberikan pelajaran hidup berharga bagi Nancy untuk keluar dari masalah batinnya dan menyadari bahwa keluarga amat penting baginya. Tak luput pula, hubungan uniknya dengan “Steven Seagull”, yang setia menemani Nancy di masa-masa sulit di batu karang. Mungkin agak berlebihan namun tak salah jika The Shallows adalah film hiu terbaik sejak Jaws.
