Film rom-com masa kini berlatar 1990-an rasanya jarang sekali kita temui. Film 20th Century Girl rupanya mampu membawa era pergantian milenium ini dengan cara yang unik. 20th Century Girl adalah film komedi romantis produksi Korea Selatan arahan sineas debutan Bang Woo-ri. Film rilisan Netflix ini dibintangi  Kim Yoo-jung, Byeon Woo-seok, Park Jung-woo, dan Roh Yoon-seo. Sejak, My Sassy Girl (2001), rasanya belum ada film komedi romantis produksi Korea yang menyaingi suksesnya, apa film ini jawabnya?

“When I think of him, my heart hurts a bit”

Berlatar menjelang pergantian milennium dua dekade lalu, Na Bo-ra (Yoo-jung) adalah gadis SMU yang memiliki sahabat dekat Yeon-do (Yoon-seo). Yeon-do memiliki kelainan jantung sehingga harus melakukan operasi di AS. Namun di saat bersamaan, ia jatuh hati pada siswa pindahan bernama Baek Hyun-jin (Jung-woo). Bo-ra pun mendapat misi untuk mencari semua informasi tentang Hyun-jin agar Yeon-do bisa mendekati pujaan hatinya kelak. Untuk mendekati idola sahabatnya bukan perkara mudah, Bo-ra pun lalu mendekati sahabat Hyun-jin, Poong Woon-ho (Woo-seok) untuk mendapat info tentangnya. Namun, lambat laun Bo-ra pun jatuh hati pada Woon-ho.

Premis yang menarik dan romantis ini dijamin bakal mengharu-biru target penontonnya. Melalui polah konyol Bo-ra yang lincah dan bawel, sosok ini mampu dibawakan sang bintang, Kim Yoo-jung dengan sempurna. Apapun dilakukan Bo-ra untuk sahabatnya, termasuk hal-hal absurd sekalipun, yang bakal membuat kita terpingkal. Sering bertemu, rasa suka pun muncul. Sebuah proses panjang yang disajikan sabar, akhirnya berbuah manis, sesuai ekspektasi kita. Era 1990-an pun memberi warna unik bagi kisahnya, di mana pager dan telpon umum masih menjadi alat komunikasi andalan. Tak disangka, ini rupanya hanya awal menuju kejutan besar yang membawa kisahnya lebih dari film roman kebanyakan.

Banyak momen di film ini memiliki sensasi nostalgia era 1990-an, di mana teknologi belum banyak berperan dalam aktivitas sehari-hari seperti sekarang. Ya, bisa jadi mirip Dilan 1990, hanya saja 20th Century Girl lebih banyak mengeksplorasi era ini dengan ragam variasi set dan propertinya. Video kaset banyak mendapat tempat dalam kisahnya, karena usaha ayah Bo-ra adalah rentalan video kaset. Bukan hanya Bo-ra dihukum karena membawa kaset video dewasa ke sekolah, namun adalah sajian pamungkas di penghujung kisah yang isi videonya bakal membuat air mata penikmat genrenya mengalir deras. Walau ini sebenarnya masih bisa disajikan lebih memorable lagi, mirip dengan adegan ending film ikonik Italia, Cinema Paradiso.

20th Century Girl adalah satu kisah rom-com memikat dengan pesona penampilan sang bintang, dan memiliki sesuatu yang lebih dari sekadar kisah roman biasa. Empat bintang muda di atas bermain apik, khususnya Yoo-jung yang bermain di atas rata-rata. Aktingnya bisa dipadankan dengan Jun Ji-Hyun yang bermain garang dalam My Sassy Girl. Namun untuk kisah romannya, rasanya masih belum se-absurd My Sassy Girl. 20th Century Girl tidak hanya bicara soal cinta dan persahabatan, namun juga kedewasaan. Di luar ini semua, 20th Century Girl adalah sebuah love letter untuk era 1990-an yang penuh memori dan nostalgia.
