Sudah lama sejak Logan, genre superhero mencoba sesuatu yang berbeda, dan Samaritan adalah satu jawabnya. Samaritan digarap oleh sineas asal Australia, Julius Avery. Film ini dibintangi sekaligus diproduseri oleh aktor laga legendaris, Silvester Stallone didampingi Javon Walton, Pilou Asbæk, serta Dascha Polanco. Film berdurasi 101 menit ini baru saja dirilis secara streaming oleh platform Amazon Prime. Apakah Samaritan mampu menyumbang sesuatu yang baru untuk genrenya?

Di sebuah kota kumuh bernama Granite City, 25 tahun yang lalu, rivalitas dua manusia super, Samaritan dan Nemesis, mencapai puncaknya hingga keduanya konon tewas dalam satu ledakan besar. Kini, bocah cilik bernama Sam (Walton) mempercayai bahwa idolanya, Samaritan masih hidup. Sam yang tinggal dalam lingkungan keras, bersusah payah untuk membantu ibunya mencari tambahan uang, walau bergabung dengan satu gang kriminal. Pada satu momen, Sam ditolong oleh tetangga tuanya, Joe (Stallone), yang ia percayai adalah Samaritan. Sementara, Cyrus (Asbæk), sang ketua gang, berhasil mencuri palu mistik milik Nemesis. Dengan kekuatan barunya, ia mengajak warga kota untuk melakukan teror kriminal dan kerusuhan di kota tersebut.

Genre superhero belum penah menyajikan kisah macam ini, berbeda tipis adalah Logan dengan pendekatan kisah dan estetik yang kontras. Relasi Sam dan Joe, memang sesuatu yang baru untuk genrenya. Setting kota yang kotor dan kumuh makin mendukung kisahnya yang suram. Stallone yang akrab dengan setting macam ini (seri Rocky), seolah pulang kampung melalui sosok Joe yang sedikit banyak memang mirip Rocky. Sosok Joe begitu membumi melalui set film noir (kota) dengan segala hingar bingarnya. Chemistry sang bintang dengan setting dan sosok Sam, sayangnya tak mampu dieksplorasi lebih sabar oleh naskahnya. Dalam beberapa momen, kisahnya tampak dipaksakan untuk maju ke depan. Semua itu hanya untuk satu aksi dan kejutan besar di segmen klimaks.

Segar untuk genrenya serta terangkat pencapaian artistik film noir yang mengesankan dan tentunya sang bintang, namun Samaritan terlalu bergegas mengarahkan plotnya tanpa mampu menggoreskan bekas mendalam. Samaritan melewatkan peluang untuk membuat suatu perbedaan besar dalam genrenya. Logan berhasil karena berani mengambil resiko dengan menawarkan rating R melalui adegan brutal dan dialog kasarnya. Bukan berarti brutal dan kasar lantas baik, namun set dan plot Samaritan mendukung untuk ini. Set film noir menandakan nuansa serba abu-abu, di mana kebaikan dan kejahatan tipis bedanya. Bukankah ini yang mau dituju kisah filmnya?
