Jump Cut

Jump-cut merupakan sebuah lompatan gambar dalam satu rangkaian shot akibat perubahan posisi karakter atau obyek dalam latar yang sama, atau sebaliknya, posisi karakter dan obyek tetap namun latar berubah seketika. Efeknya akan tampak seperti seorang karakter atau obyek berpindah posisi atau berpindah lokasi secara mendadak dengan tidak wajar. Teknik ini umumnya dihindari oleh sineas kebanyakan karena dapat memutus hubungan kontinuitas gambar atau sering diistilahkan “jumping”.

Teknik ini dipopulerkan sineas kondang Perancis, Jean-Luc Godard melalui film panjang debutnya, Breathless (1960). Godard sepanjang film melanggar aturan kontinuitas ruang, temporal, serta grafik secara sistematik dengan teknik jump-cut. Pada sebuah adegan tampak Godard melakukan jump-cut sehingga kedua karakter seolah berpindah posisi dalam sekejap.

Dalam era modern saat ini jump-cut sudah jamak digunakan. Teknik jump-cut seringkali tampak digunakan dalam film-film independen yang menggunakan handheld camera. Dalam Dancer in the Dark, sang sineas Lars Von Trier juga menggunakan jump-cut hampir sepanjang filmnya. Teknik ini juga seringkali digunakan untuk menunjukkan situasi kacau, kebingungan, gelisah, atau terburu-buru. Dalam banyak film, teknik jump-cut seringkali dipadukan dengan teknik montage sequence untuk menunjukkan serangkaian aksi dari waktu ke waktu dalam sebuah momen. Dalam film animasi Tangled, jump-cut digunakan beberapa kali ketika Rapunzel berusaha memasukkan laki-laki penyusup misterius ke dalam lemari. Hal yang sama juga tampak dalam film komedi horor, Zombieland, jump-cut digunakan untuk menunjukkan dari waktu ke waktu mereka berganti posisi selama perjalanan.
