Ne Zha adalah film animasi raksasa Tiongkok yang kini membuat sensasi besar dengan sukses meraih lebih dari US$ 700 juta hanya di negaranya saja. Angka ini mencatatkan Ne Zha sebagai film terlaris di dunia jika dihitung dalam satu negara saja. Ne Zha yang juga dirilis dalam versi layar raksasa (IMAX) diarahkan oleh Jiaozi, tanpa satu pun menggunakan pemain bintang untuk pengisi suaranya. Kisahnya sendiri diadaptasi lepas dari novel klasik abad 16 berjudul Inggris, Investiture of the Gods, yang mengisahkan tentang sosok mitologi klasik, Ne Zha. Lalu, bagaimana pencapaiam Ne Zha jika disandingkan dengan film-film animasi mapan produksi studio di seberang sana?

Alkisah Ne Zha terlahir dari bola iblis yang secara tak sengaja tertukar akibat ulah seorang dewa yang licik. Ia lahir dari perut sang ibu, Yin, yang bersuamikan jendral perang besar, Li Jing yang kini menjadi penguasa wilayah kota. Warga kota yang tahu latar Ne Zha, tak ayal takut dan membencinya. Sementara sang guru, Dewa Taiyi, selalu melindungi dan mengajarkannya untuk berbuat baik. Ne Zha yang kesepian seolah hanya bisa menanti takdirnya sebagai seorang dewa iblis walau di dalam hatinya sebenarnya terdapat sisi kebaikan.

Kisahnya dibuka dengan tempo cepat, begitu pun dialognya, yang tentu bakal membuat kita kebingungan karena harus beradaptasi dengan membaca teks terjemahan di bawah sana. Beberapa sosok dewa diperkenalkan dengan amat cepat, Tian Zun (dewanya dewa), dan dua muridnya, Taiyi yang berkendaraan babi terbang hingga si licik, Shen Gongbao. Belum sempat bernafas, kita diberondong kisah latar tentang “bola iblis” dan “permata kebaikan” hingga berujung masing-masing masuk pada janin sang ibu, Ne Zha dan telur naga yang berisikan Ang Bao. Jujur, saya agak kewalahan mencerna kisahnya di momen awal ini, rasanya banyak info yang terlewat.

Plot mulai berjalan normal ketika Ne Zha beranjak bocah. Kisahnya mulai bisa kita nikmati karena plot mulai terfokus pada sosok cilik Ne Zha. Kisahnya yang unik mulai tampak yang jarang sekali kita lihat dalam film-film barat. Citra iblis dalam diri Ne Zha membuat kita mudah bersimpati dengan sosok Ne Zha yang tak punya teman dan dibenci satu warga kota. Ia sebenarnya hanya ingin teman bermain, namun tak ada yang mau bermain dengannya. Kisahnya pun mulai menghangat ketika ia menyelamatkan seorang gadis cilik dan Ang Bao. Kekuatan kisahnya ada di sini sebenarnya. Ada sisi kebaikan di lubuk hati Ne Zha. Tak sulit menebak arah kisahnya bakal ke mana, namun proses perjalanannya sungguh mengejutkan dan amat menyentuh hati di penghujung klimaksnya. Belum lagi ditambah sisi humor dan aksi pertarungan yang spektakuler.

Ne Zha adalah film animasi fantasi produksi Tiong Kok yang memiliki kisah dengan protagonis unik yang segar, hangat, serta visualisasi yang tak kalah jauh dari pesaingnya dari studio-studio mapan di Barat sana. Ya tentu saja, bicara kualitas animasi jelas tak perlu dibandingkan dengan studio barat yang sudah lama mapan. Jika misal saja, Ne Zha diproduksi Pixar, rasanya punya potensi menjadi film animasi terbaik yang pernah diproduksi. Menilik sukses komersialnya, Ne Zha jelas sudah menjadi ancaman besar. Tiongkok yang memiliki ratusan kisah bijak sejenis menjadi aset di masa datang. Mereka sudah di arah yang benar dan rasanya tinggal menanti waktu untuk bisa semakin mendekati pencapaian studio-studio pesaingnya.

  1. The animation is amazing, the difference between the characters (humans, animals, clouds) and the scenery is marvellous. I wished to look at more of the buildings but that’s just me being weird. The music is great. Very exciting and also a lot using traditional Chinese instruments (one part is a tribute to the Terminator movies with traditional Chinese instruments) also the credits music of anime Ne Zha (2019) is a great song they made for the moive with a lot of great lyrics (in Chinese)
