To the Stars adalah film drama remaja arahan Martha Stephens yang diputar pertama kali di ajang Sundance Film Festival, awal tahun lalu. Film berdurasi 109 menit ini dibintangi oleh Kara Hayward, Liana Liberato, Shea Wigham, Adelaide Clemens, serta Malin Akerman. Film remaja yang ber-setting cerita era 60-an di wilayah pinggiran memang tergolong langka, so apa yang mau ditawarkan film ini dengan yang lainnya?

Iris Deerborne adalah gadis remaja canggung yang kurang percaya diri dalam pergaulan. Suatu ketika, siswi baru bernama Maggie datang dengan pesona gadis kota, kontras dengan karakter Iris. Maggie pun langsung dekat dengan Iris, dan ia membawa banyak perubahan bagi si gadis desa sehingga ia bisa lebih percaya diri. Namun, dibalik semua kepercayaan diri Maggie, ternyata gadis ini memiliki problem yang jauh lebih besar dari Iris.

Kisahnya diawali dengan ringan yang menggambarkan pertemuan hingga hubungan Iris dengan Maggie yang semakin lekat. Plot macam ini memang sudah jamak untuk genre remaja sejenis. Namun,  berjalannya waktu, kisahnya ternyata tidak sesederhana yang kita pikir. Sejalan dengan masalah batin yang mulai terkuak dari sosok Maggie, alur kisahnya menjadi lebih kompleks dan arah plot hingga ending pun sulit diantisipasi. Bahkan siapa sangka, unsur LGBT pun disinggung di sini, tanpa basa-basi sebelumnya.

To the Stars adalah sebuah drama unik dengan beragam konflik remaja-dewasa yang mengekspresikan dengan baik enegara AS di era ini. Pujian besar tentu ditujukan pada sang bintang, Liana Liberato yang bermain demikian ekspresif sebagai sosok Maggie yang “modern”. Sosok Iris yang konvensional dan Maggie yang bebas dan liar serta kelseluruhan kisahnya, merepresentasikan dengan baik bagaimana kecanggungan negara AS di awal era perang dingin, yang sulit menerima sesuatu satu hal baru, yang tak bisa mereka pahami.
