From Russia with Love merupakan film ke-2 yang dibintangi Sean Connery. Sejak film pertama James Bond, Dr.No, elemen dan gaya film Bond makin dimapankan disini baik segi cerita maupun sinematik. Kisahnya cukup kompleks, musuh bebuyutan Bond, SPECTRE yang dikepalai Ernst Blonfeld membuat sebuah plot untuk membalas dendam pada Bond yang telah membunuh anggota mereka, Dr. No, sekaligus mendapatkan mesin kode rahasia milik Soviet, Lektor. SPECTRE memanfaatkan agen Rusia, Tatiana Romanova (Bianchi) yang diskenario membelot dengan menyerahkan mesin Lektor dengan meminta Bond sebagai kontaknya. SPECTRE mengirim seorang agen tangguhnya, Red Grant (Shaw) untuk mengawasi dan menghabisi mereka pada waktunya kelak.

Kisahnya sangat menarik, menegangkan, serta penuh intrik. Sejak awal cerita, penonton telah mengetahui persis siapa dalang dibalik semua namun pihak Rusia dan Inggris tidak. Penonton hanya bisa menunggu dan menunggu, kapan Grant beraksi membunuh mereka, serta bagaimana reaksi Bond dan Tatiana. Tidak hingga menit ke-90, Bond baru mengetahui persis semua masalah. Bukan hal mudah untuk bisa mengulur waktu selama ini untuk bisa membuat rasa penasaran penonton tetap terjaga. Waktu demi waktu berjalan ketegangan justru semakin meningkat. Lokasi cerita yang secara brilyan mengambil lokasi di gerbong kereta api (sepertiga durasi film berlokasi disini) yang sempit dan terbatas semakin membuat efek ketegangan yang luar biasa. Setelahnya hanya menyisakan klimaks cerita berupa sekuan aksi yang hasilnya mudah ditebak. Namun scene akhir di kamar hotel merupakan kejutan luar biasa tanpa bisa kita antisipasi sebelumnya.

Sekuen aksinya pun tidak kalah dengan film-film aksi masa kini. Adegan aksi ketika Bond diteror helikopter benar-benar terlihat nyata dan menegangkan, Bond (stuntman) beberapa kali nyaris saja menyenggol helikopter yang terbang begitu rendah. Lalu adegan aksi kejar-mengejar di sungai menggunakan Boat walau tidak atraktif seperti film-film masa kini namun cukup membuat penonton takjub dengan aksi ledakan hebat. Justru yang mengesankan adalah aksi perkelahian Grant vs Bond di gerbong KA, dengan lokasi sempit dan terbatas mampu memberikan ketegangan maksimum.

From Russia With Love adalah contoh sempurna film Bond yang mampu menyeimbangkan antara plot yang penuh intrik, unsur ketegangan, dan aksi-aksi seru. Thriller menjadi unsur yang dominan ketimbang aksinya, ini yang memang seharusnya menjadi keunggulan film bergenre spionase. Tak bisa dilupakan pula adalah penampilan Connery yang mampu memperlihatkan sosok Bond yang penuh percaya diri, karismatik, serius namun juga humoris. Semua pemain terangkat penampilannya berkat akting Connery. Dengan segala kelebihannya tidak salah jika banyak orang beranggapan jika From Russia With Love adalah salah satu film Bond terbaik.
