James Bond investigates the hijacking of British and Russian submarines carrying nuclear warheads, with the help of a K.G.B. agent whose lover he killed.

Secara misterius dua kapal selam bermuatan nuklir milik AS dan Rusia hilang dan ini memancing perang dingin antar kedua negara termasuk negara-negara sekutu mereka. Rusia dan Inggris mengirimkan agen-agen terbaik mereka. Agen MI6, James Bond (Moore) dan agen KGB, Anya Asamova (Bach), awalnya saling berseteru namun mereka menjadi tim mengungkap dalang di balik semuanya. Penyelidikan mengarah pada bilyuner Curd Stromberg (Jürgens), yang memang ingin memancing perang dunia ketiga dan menciptakan dunia baru di bawah samudra. Bawahan Stromberg, Jaws (Kiel), seorang raksasa yang memiliki gigi besi, beberapa kali terlibat bentrok dengan Bond dan Anya.

Plot sejenis ini bukan hal baru lagi untuk film Bond, Your only Live Twice juga memiliki inti plot sama dan bahkan sineasnya pun sama, Lewis Gilbert. Gilbert terbukti sudah piawai menangani film berskala kolosal jenis ini. Kisahnya memang relatif ringan dan ending-nya mudah diantisipasi. Salah satu unsur pembeda adalah bumbu roman Bond dan Anya. Mereka berdua sama-sama cerdas, tangguh, tangkas, berani, serta sepadan dari banyak sisi namun ada usaha untuk membuat situasi tak terkontrol ketika Anya mengetahui bahwa Bond ternyata adalah orang yang membunuh kekasihnya (sekuen pembuka). Tema dan plotnya memang bukan keunggulan film ini dan semata hanya pengantar untuk mendukung aspek lain filmnya, yakni adegan aksi.

Baik gadget Bond maupun adegan aksinya jauh melebihi Your Only Live Twice. Hal yang mencolok adalah mobil Lotus Esprit yang mampu beraksi di darat dan air. Sekuen aksi kejar-mengejar seru Bond versus motor, mobil, hingga helikopter ternyata hanya pembuka saja. Secara mengejutkan mobil ini ternyata mampu menyelam dalam air layaknya kapal selam, bahkan beraksi melawan para penyelam dan kapal selam mini milik Stromberg. Semuanya disajikan dengan sangat meyakinkan tanpa efek visual sama sekali. Sekuen aksi klimaks yang menjadi andalan Gilbert didominasi aksi tembak menembak, namun setting-nya yang besar dan megah (interior tanker) menjadikannya cukup istimewa.

The Spy Who Loved Me menggunakan formula yang terbukti banyak disukai penonton. Plot sederhana dan kolosal, aksi-aksi seru yang menawan, peralatan Bond super modern, setting yang megah, unsur humor, dan bumbu roman digunakan dalam film-film Bond berikutnya (Moonraker dan semua film Bond yang dibintangi Brosnan) dan terbukti semuanya sukses besar. Nuansa thriller spionase mulai meredup tergantikan oleh dominasi teknologi tinggi dan aksi namun bagaimanapun juga formula ini menjadi tradisi film-film Bond. The Spy Who Loved Me adalah satu contoh sempurna bagaimana genre spionase diperlakukan untuk dapat menarik penonton dalam jumlah besar.
