Rasanya tak ada siapa pun dulu yang menyangka, jika It bakal meraih sukses global sebesar US$ 700 juta dengan bujet hanya USD 35 juta saja. Bermodal bujet dua kali lipat, kini sekuelnya diproduksi dengan masih diarahkan oleh Andy Muschietti. Tak hanya itu, filmnya kini juga dibintangi aktor-aktris papan atas, sebut saja James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, serta kembali aktor Bill Skarsgard bermain sebagai sang badut Pennywise. Uniknya, semua pemain cilik di seri pertamanya kembali bemain dalam film ini sekalipun hanya muncul dalam segmen kilas balik. Lantas, apakah adaptasi novel populer Stephen King ini juga bisa sukses komersial dan kritik seri pertamanya?

Dua puluh tujuh tahun berselang, kota kecil Derry kembali diteror sang badut, Pennywise yang kembali memakan korban anak-anak. Anggota The Losers Club, Bill, Beverly, Ben, Richie, Stanley, Eddie, dan Mike, kini sudah beranjak dewasa dan diantaranya bahkan telah menjadi orang sukses. Kini, hanya Mike seorang yang masih tinggal di Derry. Mike memanggil mereka semua untuk sekali lagi menghadapi sang badut iblis yang kini kembali mengincar nyawa mereka.

Terlalu lama dan membosankan. Ini kesan pertama yang didapat dari plot filmnya. Formula plotnya nyaris mengulang seri pertamanya dengan adegan-adegan horor yang repetitif. Konflik, alur plot, segmen klimaks nyaris sama dengan seri pertama. Nyaris tak ada kejutan apa pun. Satu-satunya yang membuat film ini terasa menarik adalah segmen kilas-baliknya yang dominan disajikan sepanjang kisahnya. Dialog dan konflik orang dewasa tak lantas membuat film ini juga lebih menarik dari segmen masa lalu mereka. Kasting aktor-aktris papan atas nyatanya juga tak banyak membantu mengangkat filmnya.

Bujet yang lebih mapan tentu berujung pada sisi teknik yang lebih mapan pula, khususnya dari sisi setting. Namun, tak lantas membuat adegannya, khususnya segmen horornya bisa lebih baik. Persis seperti seri pertama yang bernuansa absurd (sureal), segmen horornya juga terasa repetitif. Melelahkan, karena trik horornya terasa usang dan mudah terbaca dengan banyak menggunakan efek CGI yang tentu sudah tak lagi menyeramkan untuk genrenya di masa sekarang. Kadang yang menarik justru adalah karena segmen horornya menyisipkan tribute film horor lainnya, misal saja Shinning.

It Chapter 2 menggunakan formula plot nyaris sama dengan seri pertamanya, namun kini terlalu panjang, membosankan, plus sentuhan horor yang tak menggigit dengan penggunaan CGI yang sudah lazim. Energi dan kehangatan seri pertamanya, kini telah hilang, dan ironisnya justru tertolong segmen kilas-baliknya. Mengutip satu adegan rada konyol dalam film ini, jika ada pilihan pintu untuk menonton chapter pertama dan chapter kedua, saya jelas akan memilih pintu pertama.
