Setelah rilis Die Hard (1988) beberapa film aksi yang menggunakan plot bertema sejenis bermunculan namun belum ada satu pun yang bisa menandingi. The Rock adalah bisa dibilang adaptasi plot “Die Hard” yang terbaik sejauh ini. The Rock sangat kuat dari aspek mana pun baik kisah maupun teknis yang digarap sangat baik oleh sineas kawakan Michael Bay. Alkisah sekelompok eks militer pimpinan Jendral Frank Hummel (Harris) mengambil-alih pulau wisata Alcatraz yang dahulu adalah penjara maximum security. Mereka meminta tebusan sebesar $100 juta dengan mengancam akan meluncurkan misil bersenjata kimia ke kota San Fransisco. FBI meminta bantuan ahli senjata kimia, Dr. Stanley Goodspeed (Cage) dan seorang lagi, John Mason (Connery), mantan agen rahasia Inggris yang juga eks tahanan Alcaltraz yang berhasil lolos dari penjara tersebut. Mereka berdua adalah tim pelengkap pasukan marinir khusus yang dikirim kesana.

Plot utamanya secara keseluruhan dibagi dalam dua segmen besar. Separuh cerita pertama sebagian besar berlokasi di luar Alcatraz, dan separuh cerita kedua berlokasi dalam pulau. Plot “Die Hard” adalah kejutan cerita yang baru muncul setelah separuh filmnya. Rencana pihak FBI yang demikian matang berjalan mulus tidak hingga semua pasukan marinir dihabisi oleh Jendral Hummel dan hanya menyisakan seorang ahli kimia dan seorang mantan agen yang telah uzur. Harapan hanya tertumpu pada dua underdog, Goodspeed dan Mason. Alur kisah berjalan menegangkan tanpa kita bisa tahu bagaimana ending-nya karena semua bisa saja terjadi.

Sebagai film aksi The Rock menyajikan serangkaian adegan aksi berkualitas. Adegan kejar-mengejar mobil di separuh pertama adalah salah satu sekuen car-chase terbaik yang pernah ada. Juga aksi-aksi di separuh kedua yang berujung pada adegan klimaks yang sangat menegangkan ketika pemerintah memutuskan untuk membumihanguskan pulau Alcatraz. Gerakan kamera yang dinamis serta editing cepat gaya khas Bay berpadu sempurna menyajikan sebuah tontonan yang amat menghibur. Satu aspek lagi yang menjadi kekuatan besar filmnya yang mendukung seluruh adegannya adalah ilustrasi musik membahana yang digarap oleh komposer kawakan Hans Zimmer. Ilustrasi musik The Rock adalah salah satu karya terbaiknya.
