Acting under the cover of a Hollywood producer scouting a location for a science fiction film, a CIA agent launches a dangerous operation to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran in 1979.

Argo belum lama ini berhasil meraih Oscar untuk film terbaik di ajang Academy Awards. Apakah film ini layak meraih predikat film terbaik? Inti kisahnya sederhana saja. Pada tahun 1979 di tengah konflik politik Iran dan AS yang semakin memanas, kedutaan besar AS di Teheran, diserbu oleh massa demonstran dan menyekap puluhan sandera warga AS. Enam warga AS berhasil melarikan diri dan bersembunyi di kediaman Duta Besar Kanada. Pemerintah AS melalui CIA merespon situasi ini dan mencari cara untuk mengeluarkan enam orang tersebut keluar wilayah Iran. Tony Mendez (Afleck), agen CIA spesialis pembebasan sandera, memiliki ide gila yang diyakininya bisa menyelesaikan masalah ini.

Plot “Mission Impossible” sejenis ini boleh jadi tidak seheboh film-film spionase hebat lainnya namun faktor kejadian nyata serta kepiawaian sang sineas dalam mengemas aksi thriller ini menjadikan film ini luar biasa. Di luar dramatisasi kisahnya, film ini mampu menyajikan sebuah tontonan yang sangat menegangkan sejak awal hingga akhir. Tempo cerita yang begitu cepat dan tanpa jeda membuat film berdurasi dua jam ini terasa singkat. Penonton demikian mudah larut ke dalam kisahnya hingga seolah bisa merasakan secara nyata ketegangan para pelaku sekaligus mengalihkan kita ke ending-nya yang sudah diantisipasi. Sekuen klimaks dijamin bakal membuat jantung kita berdegup kencang karena aksinya begitu menegangkan.

Persilangan antar adegan adalah teknik yang dominan dalam film ini. Teknik crosscutting efektif membantu menghidupkan ketegangan adegan demi adegan, seperti tersaji sempurna pada sekuen klimaks. Tema dan kisahnya adalah memang kekuatan utama film ini namun tidak untuk aspek kastingnya. Para pemain bermain biasa tanpa ada yang menonjol, lalu siapa yang percaya tampang seperti Afleck memiliki darah Mexico? Penampilan meyakinkan justru datang dari John Goodman dan Alan Arkin yang berperan sebagai pelaku industri film Hollywood.

Argo sebagai tontonan adalah sebuah film yang amat menghibur dan memiliki pendekatan estetik yang tinggi namun jika kita menilik fakta yang sesungguhnya terjadi, film ini tampak sekali terlalu didramatisir pada banyak adegannya. That’s what movie all about. Salah satu kekuatan medium film adalah dramatisasi sebuah kisah. Setelah melihat film ini, bisa percayakah Anda jika otoritas Iran sungguh-sungguh mengijinkan sebuah film fiksi ilmiah a la Star Wars akan diproduksi di wilayah tersebut ditengah situasi politik yang demikian panas? Jika ya, film ini memang layak meraih Oscar.
