A young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.

Seorang pembunuh berantai berinisial Buffalo Bill (Levine) tengah berkeliaran menculik dan membunuh gadis-gadis muda yang membuat pihak FBI kelimpungan. Clarice Sterling (Foster) adalah agen muda FBI yang ditugaskan atasannya, Jack Crawford (Glenn) untuk meminta petunjuk dari seorang pembunuh berantai dan psikopat kelas kakap, Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins) yang kini tengah ditahan di sebuah penjara khusus. Awalnya Lecter sulit untuk dimintai keterangan namun akhirnya sang psikopat menyetujui namun dengan permintaan ia dipindah dari penjaranya kini. Buffalo Bill yang belum lama menculik putri seorang senator memaksa Crawford dan Sterling membuat janji palsu dengan Lecter yakni mengabulkan permintaannya jika ia bisa membantu menemukan si penculik dan korbannya.

The Silence of the Lamb rasanya adalah salah satu contoh film terbaik yang mampu mengkombinasikan unsur drama, misteri, thriller, serta horor dengan amat sempurna. Plot filmnya dituturkan dengan lambat merangkai kejadian demi kejadian yang setiap saat penuh dengan kejutan. Sepanjang filmnya penonton sulit memprediksi apa yang akan terjadi berikutnya sehingga selalu mengusik rasa penasaran serta ketakutan kita. Tercatat adegan paling menegangkan adalah ketika Lecter yang kabur dari tahanan sementara serta adegan klimaks di akhir film yang sangat mengejutkan. Sementara sisi dramatiknya terbangun dari karakter Lecter dan Clarice yang seolah memiliki hubungan emosional layaknya ayah dan putrinya.

Cerita yang dituturkan apik semakin komplit dengan pencapaian estetik filmnya yang istimewa. Lebih dari separuh kekuatan filmnya terletak pada chemistry antara Lecter dan Clarice yang diperankan sangat brilian oleh Hopkins dan Foster. Hopkins seolah terlahir untuk sosok psikopat dingin, Hannibal Lecter. Ia tampil sempurna memerankan psikopat yang sosoknya merupakan kombinasi kecerdasan manusia serta insting hewani. Sosoknya yang begitu menakutkan mampu membuat kita merinding setiap kali ia muncul. Sementara Foster walau tak sehebat akting Hopkins namun ia mampu mengimbanginya dengan menampilkan sosok agen muda Clarice yang traumatik, cerdas, serta lugu. Tak heran jika keduanya meraih piala Oscar untuk penampilan akting memukau mereka.

Di luar pencapaian semua diatas, ilustrasi musik yang digarap Howard Shore juga mampu membangun nuansa misteri serta horor dalam tiap adegannya. Teknik sinematografi dan editing pun juga tidak kalah menawannya. Teknik close up pada setiap adegan dialog Lecter (dalam tahanan) dan Clarice seolah mampu mendekatkan jarak fisik dan batin mereka berdua. Tercatat pula crosscutting brilyan di sekuen klimaks filmnya ketika adegan penyergapan polisi dijamin mampu mengejutkan kita semua. Pencapaian fantastis dari sisi naratif dan estetik The Silince of the Lamb tidak berlebihan rasanya jika kita anggap sebagai film thriller terbaik yang pernah ada.
