Coco adalah film ke-19 produksi studio Pixar yang digarap oleh Lee Unkrich yang juga mengarahkan Toy Story 3. Pixar kini mengambil latar cerita budaya Mexico, dengan para pengisi suara antara lain, Anthony Gonzales, Gael García Bernal, serta Benjamin Bratt. Dengan reputasinya, mampukah Pixar menjaga tradisinya memproduksi film-film animasi berkualitas tinggi? Ya bahkan lebih.

Miguel adalah bocah cilik dari keluarga besar Rivera yang dikenal karena produk usaha sepatunya. Keluarga Rivera sangat menjaga tradisi ini secara turun temurun. Miguel amat mencintai musik, sesuatu yang amat dibenci dan dilarang keras oleh keluarganya. Demi cinta dan cita-citanya pada musik, dan sang musikus idolanya Ernesto de la Cruz, ia berniat mengikuti lomba bakat di alun-alun desanya. Niatnya ini rupanya berakibat Miguel harus berpetualang di dunia arwah dan bertemu para leluhurnya.

Film dibuka dengan montage yang amat unik dan tersaji manis menggambarkan sejarah keluarga Rivera, dan mengapa mereka begitu membenci musik. Pixar kali ini membawa kita sebuah dunia cerita segar yang berlatar sebuah desa di Mexico. Pencapaian visual serta audio yang begitu hidup membuat kita seolah lepas dari sajian film animasi. Film ini begitu membumi dengan menyajikan budaya lokal yang kental, plus  dialek dan sisipan penggunaan bahasa latin. Semua begitu natural. Saking larutnya kita ke dalam cerita hingga kemasan sinematiknya pun melekat erat dengan kisahnya tanpa kita sadari. Sangat mengesankan sekali.

Film ini banyak mengingatkan pada film animasi The Book of Life (2014) yang sama-sama menyajikan budaya lokal Mexico (Día de los Muertos) dan berkisah tentang alam arwah, namun terfokus pada kisah roman. Coco bicara lebih jauh dari ini. Coco tidak hanya menyinggung passion musik yang menjadi jiwa rakyat Mexico, namun juga tentang tradisi keluarga menghormati para leluhur. Kisah di awal sempat mengecoh, inti film ini sama sekali tidak bicara soal musik. Beberapa segmen menyentuh di penghujung film, dijamin bakal menguras air mata penonton. Momen dramatik yang begitu hangat seperti ini memang bukan hal baru bagi film-film Pixar, namun adalah pencapaian langka bagi film animasi.

Apa lagi yang mau kita komentari dari Coco? Sebuah hiburan segala usia yang sempurna. Hangat, enerjik, penuh warna dan musik, sisipan komedi, serta sarat pesan luhur tentang kehidupan. Coco bukan hanya bicara tentang passion, namun sesuatu yang lebih tinggi. Satu nilai kearifan lokal yang tidak jauh pula dari budaya kita, yakni menghormati para leluhur. Gapailah cita-citamu setinggi langit, namun jangan melupakan sesuatu yang terpenting dari hidup kita, yakni keluarga, karena tanpa mereka, kita tidak akan pernah ada. Coco berada di antara karya-karya terbaik Studio Pixar sebelumnya, dan tak ada keraguan film ini bakal menjadi jawara kategori film animasi terbaik dalam ajang Academy Awards tahun depan.
