A couple retreat to the island that inspired Ingmar Bergman to write screenplays for their upcoming films when the lines between reality and fiction start to blur.

Bergman Island adalah film garapan sineas Perancis, Mia Hansen Love yang juga menulis naskahnya. Film ini dibintangi Vicky Krieps, Tim Roth, Mia Wasikowska, serta Andres Danielsen Lie. Film ini diputar pertama kali di ajang Cannes Film Festival bulan Juli lalu. Keunikan film ini, jelas mengarah pada sineas legendaris Swedia, Ingmar Bergman, di mana setting kisahnya adalah kampung halaman sang sineas, di Pulau Faro, di mana ia juga memproduksi film-film masterpiece-nya di sana.

Chris (Krieps) dan Toni Sanders (Roth) adalah pasangan sineas yang berkunjung ke Pulau Faro untuk mencari inspirasi dalam menulis naskah film mereka. Mereka tinggal di sebuah homestay yang juga salah satu film Bergman diproduksi di sana. Di sela-sela aktivitas menulis, mereka juga mengunjungi tempat-tempat bersejarah Bergman serta berdiskusi dengan para penikmat film serius lainnya. Tidak seperti Tony, Chris mengalami kebuntuan dalam menulis. Ia pun lalu mencari caranya sendiri dengan mengunjungi beberapa lokasi personal mendiang Bergman.

Dijamin, film ini rasanya bakal membosankan bagi yang tidak pernah tahu siapa Ingmar Bergman. Terlebih jika belum menonton film-filmnya. Lantas apa hubungannya dengan plot film ini? Inti plotnya simpel, terfokus pada sosok Chris yang seperti masih bimbang, belum menemukan jati diri dan tujuan hidup. Bergman seolah menjadi katalis baginya untuk membuka pikirannya. Film-film Bergman juga banyak terfokus pada sosok perempuan dengan tipikal karakter macam ini. Keunikan dalam kisahnya semakin menjadi ketika plotnya berpadu dengan imajinasi Chris tentang ide cerita yang ia kembangkan. Bahkan imajinasi dan realita bertabrakan di akhir cerita. Film-film Bergman banyak bermain di situasi macam ini, sebut saja Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Wild Strawberry, dan Cries and Whisper. Ini yang membuat Bergman Island begitu istimewa. Bergman Island bisa jadi bukan tontonan untuk awam, dengan berbalut drama-roman unik serta tribute besar untuk sang maestro sinema, Ingmar Bergman. Sayangnya, keunikan dan relasi naskah dengan film-film Bergman tidak jauh sampai ke sisi estetik. Film ini disajikan lebih dekat ke gaya dokumenter, jauh dari gaya visual Bergman yang mapan dan terukur dengan dominasi close-up. Memang tak mungkin pula, film ini disajikan gaya teatrikal layaknya film Bergman. Walau ada beberapa shot, yang merupakan tribute beberapa film Bergman, bahkan mungkin dilakukan di lokasi yang sama. Setidaknya, Bergman Island menjadi semacam tur kecil, bagi pecinta Bergman, untuk bisa tahu lebih jauh tentang kampung halaman dan peristirahatan terakhirnya. Baik secara fisik, kita seolah hadir di sana, dan tribute narasi melalui plot film ini. Jika tidak salah lihat, saya juga melihat sosok Bergman di sebuah adegan menjelang akhir.
