Based on the real-life prison break of two political captives, Escape From Pretoria is a race-against-time thriller set in the tumultuous apartheid days of South Africa.

Escape from Pretoria adalah film docu-thriller yang diadaptasi dari kisah nyata usaha pelarian napi dari penjara Pretoria pada era Apartheid di Afrika Selatan. Naskahnya diadaptasi dari buku Inside Out: Escape from Pretoria yang ditulis sang pelaku utamanya sendiri, Tim Jenkin. Film ini digarap oleh Francis Annan dengan dibintangi Daniel Radcliffe dan Daniel Webber. Film masterpiece bertema sejenis sudah ada sejak era klasik, apakah film ini mampu menyegarkan kembali subgenrenya?

Alkisah dua orang pemuda pendukung partai ANC di era apartheid tahun 1979, Tim Jenkin (Radcliffe) dan Stephen Lee (Webber) ditangkap polisi karena aksi bom poster yang mereka lakukan di tempat umum. Keduanya lalu dijebloskan penjara politik khusus tahanan kulit putih di Pretoria. Sesaat tiba di sana, Tim dan Lee pun merencanakan untuk kabur dari penjara. Tim berusaha mencari cara yang paling aman dan efektif untuk kabur, yakni dengan menggandakan kunci tahanan.

Kisah pelarian diri dari penjara sudah ada sejak era klasik, dan beberapa diantaranya terhitung sebagai masterpiece, catat saja The Great Escape, Stalag 17, La Grande Illusion, Le Trou, A Man Escaped, Escape from Alcatraz, Cool Hand Luke, hingga The Shawshank Redemption. Di antara film-film berkelas ini di mana posisi Pretoria? Untuk era milenium baru ini, boleh dibilang Pretoria adalah salah satu yang terbaik. Menonton film ini, nyaris serasa menonton film klasik dan banyak mengingatkan pada A Man Escape karya Robert Bresson.

Proses adalah inti kisah film ini yang disajikan sangat detil dari momen ke momen. Penonton serasa benar-benar diajak untuk ikut kabur dari penjara sejak awal hingga akhir. Hanya proses membuat satu kunci untuk satu pintu saja, disajikan amat detil hingga proses percobaannya yang menegangkan. Tak ada satu pun momen yang tersia-sia. Setting, tata kamera, suara efek, hingga editing dipadu secara manis untuk menghasilkan ketegangan maksimal. Contohnya saja seperti ketika Tim dan Leo bersembunyi di dalam lemari sementara si petugas berjalan ke sana ke mari. Satu shot langka dalam lemari disajikan secara brilian layaknya film klasik. Layaknya film horor, efek suara memang berfungsi secara efektif untuk membangun ketegangan (bukan kejutan) dalam banyak momennya.

Escape from Pretoria adalah film drama thriller “klasik” langka dengan ketegangan nonstop yang merupakan salah satu yang terbaik dari subgenrenya. Akur plot filmnya yang demikian menegangkan seolah membuat kita lepas dari penampilan para pemainnya yang bermain  apik, khususnya Radcliffe dan tentu saja Leo (Mark Leonard Winter) yang begitu ekspresif sepanjang film. Dalam banyak momen, film ini sangat terasa sebagai tribute film Perancis A Man Escaped (1956), seperti alur kisahnya yang sabar, penggunaan shot dekat, dan musik klasik.

Escape from Pretoria adalah film yang sempurna sebagai hiburan di kala situasi kini. Seperti plot filmnya, saya harap kita juga bisa lolos dari “penjara” yang kita hadapi sekarang dan bisa bebas beraktivitas seperti sediakala.
