A truck driver has been forced to smuggle illicit cargo to save her brother from a deadly prison gang. With FBI operatives hot on her trail, Sally's conscience is challenged when the final package turns out to be a teenage girl.

Paradise Highway adalah film drama thriller arahan sineas asal Norwegia Anna Gutto. Film ini dibintangi sederetan aktor-aktris papan atas, Juliette Binoche, Morgan Freeman, Frank Grillo, serta Cameron Monaghan dan Hala Finley. Dengan mengusung tema perdagangan anak dan bermodal nama-nama besar di atas, mampukah membuat satu tontonan yang berkualitas?

Sally (Binoche) bekerja sebagai sopir truk yang berkeliling untuk mengantar barang ke seluruh penjuru negara bagian. Adiknya, Dennis (Grillo) yang sebentar lagi keluar dari penjara, beberapa kali memaksa Sally untuk mengantar barang ilegal karena ancaman rekan selnya. Sally pun mendapat pekerjaan terakhir dari Dennis, yang ternyata bukan mengirim barang biasa, namun gadis cilik bernama Leila (Finley). Sampai di lokasi, tanpa diduga, si gadis menembak si penjemput, Sally pun melarikan Leila. Sally tidak hanya menjadi buron polisi, namun juga para penjahat yang mencari Leila.

Premisnya memang menarik dan seolah menjanjikan satu ketegangan yang intens. Faktanya tidak begitu. Kisah cerita justru lebih berat ke sisi drama, yakni hubungan antara Sally dan Leila. Walau terasa datar dan kurang menggigit untuk genre thriller, namun penampilan mengejutkan dari sang aktris bintang, patut menjadi catatan. Binoche, kita tahu adalah aktris senior asal Perancis yang sebagian besar filmnya adalah untuk konsumsi festival. Kini ia bermain sebagai seorang Amerika dan sopir truk pula, kontras dengan peran-peran sebelumnya yang feminim. Aksen Eropanya masih tipis terasa, namun perannya sebagai Sally jauh dari kata buruk.

Satu kasting yang mencuri perhatian adalah si cilik Hala Finley yang bermain sebagai Leila. Ia mampu bermain ekspresi dengan baik walau tanpa bicara. Kadang ia bisa terlihat dewasa karena pengalaman hidup Leila, namun di satu sisi ia bermain sebagai gadis cilik yang belum bisa berpikir jauh. Sementara Freeman dan Grillo bermain dalam tipikal peran mereka yang sudah berulang kali kita lihat. Jauh dari buruk tapi juga tak ada yang istimewa. Monaghan (Det. Finley) sebagai partner Freeman mampu mengimbangi seniornya dengan baik. Kasting adalah kekuatan terbesar film ini bukan isu penculikan anak yang berkesan hanya tempelan.

Walau intensitas thriller-nya kurang menggigit, Paradise Highway terangkat oleh penampilan sederetan kastingnya yang menawan serta isu perdagangan anak. Satu yang rasanya juga kurang mendukung adalah sisi teknis. Tone warnanya yang kuning pucat justru menjadikan film ini layaknya film independen yang berkesan “murah”. Dari sisi temanya, teks dibelakang menjadi penegas yang sebenarnya tak perlu lagi ditulis karena kisahnya sendiri tidak semata fokus ke sini. Untuk tontonan sambil lalu, Paradise Highway adalah satu tontonan yang tak buruk, asalkan kamu tidak berharap ke tontonan aksi seru.
