The Dark and the Wicked adalah film horor independen garapan Bryan Bertino. Film ini juga dimainkan beberapa nama asing di dunia film, yakni Marlin Ireland, Michael Abbot Jr. serta Xender Barkeley. Film horor dengan kisah sejenis sudah sering kita jumpai, apakah film ini mampu menawarkan sesuatu yang berbeda?

Ketika sang ayah sakit keras, Louise dan Michael datang menjenguk kedua orang tuanya di daerah peternakan terpencil yang juga merupakan rumah masa kecil mereka. Dalam perkembangan, mereka mendapati sang ibu berpolah aneh dan merasa ada sesuatu yang membuatnya begitu ketakutan. Tragedi pun terjadi, Louise dan Michael akhirnya menyadari ada sesuatu kekuatan jahat di rumah mereka yang meneror orang tua mereka.

Dari sisi cerita memang sudah tak banyak hal baru dan nyatanya tak banyak kejutan. Ending kisahnya pun terasa menggantung dan banyak hal masih menjadi misteri. Apa sebenarnya motif sang entiti untuk menghantui keluarga tersebut? Lazimnya, horor sejenis memilih untuk mempertegas motif dengan kemunculan iblis, merasuki tubuh, atau semacam itu. Film ini memiliki motif berbeda terkait tema kisahnya tentang hubungan orang tua dan anak. Dari sisi ini, film ini memiliki kemiripan tema dengan film horor Relic yang rilis bulan Juli lalu.

Kita potong dulu bahasan tema dengan pencapaian estetiknya yang benar-benar mengesankan. Atmosfir kelam, pemainan cahaya dan bayangan, sinematografi yang menawan hingga musik mencekam menjadi nilai lebih film ini, sekali pun trik horornya terbilang sederhana dan usang. Dengan perpaduan aspek tersebut, nuansa horor terbangun dengan sangat baik dan disajikan begitu mencekam dalam beberapa momen. Adegan mengerikan (sadis) pun tersaji secara gamblang yang sangat tak nyaman dilihat. Beberapa shot dalam adegannya harus diakui tersaji begitu terukur dan terkonsep dengan dengan sangat baik.

The Dark and the Wicked tidak banyak menawarkan sesuatu yang segar untuk genrenya, namun tertutup oleh pencapaian estetiknya, seperti atmosfir kelam, beberapa momen horor dan tema keluarga tentang hubungan anak dan orang tua. Tak dipungkiri, tema religius bisa jadi adalah poin besarnya karena keluarga Louise dikisahkan bukanlah keluarga yang taat dan beriman. Namun, seperti halnya Relic, rasanya tema keluarga jauh lebih terasa. Sang ayah dan ibu begitu kesepian dan keseharian mereka ditinggal putra-putri mereka yang seolah sudah tak lagi memedulikan dengan kesibukan mereka. Sang iblis hanya mengambil celah masuk pada jiwa-jiwa yang kosong ini untuk membawa mereka dalam kegelapan. Satu shot-nya menggambarkan ini dengan sangat brilian.
