The Midnight Sky adalah film bencana-fiksi ilmiah yang dirilis Netlix untuk mengisi liburan akhir tahun ini. Film arahan aktor senior George Clooney ini juga dibintangi sendiri olehnya, bersama nama-nama populer, yakni Felicity Jones, David Oleyowo, Kyle Chandler, dan Demian Bilchir. Film berbujet USD 100 juta ini diadaptasi dari novel Godmorning, Midnight karya Lily Brook-Dalton. Midnight Sky mencoba mengeksplorasi genre bencana dengan sedikit berbeda dari kelaziman genrenya.

Pada Februari 2049, sebuah bencana global melanda bumi dan memusnahkan nyaris seluruh umat manusia. Semua warga bumi di evakuasi ke lokasi yang aman, namun seorang ilmuwan tua, Augustine (Clooney) menolak untuk ikut dan tetap tinggal di sebuah observatorium di Artik. Masalah muncul ketika satu pesawat luar angkasa, Ether, kembali menuju ke bumi setelah sukses dengan misinya mencari habitat baru di orbit Planet Jupiter. Augustine berupaya menjalin komunikasi dengan pesawat angkasa tersebut untuk menyuruh mereka kembali berbalik arah, namun antena di stasiunnya tidak memadai. Di momen yang sama, Augustine mendapati seorang bocah perempuan cilik di stasiunnya tertinggal dari rombongan evakuasi sebelumnya. Bersama sang bocah, ia pun pergi menuju ke stasiun cuaca berfasilitas lebih komplet yang berjarak cukup jauh.

Tidak seperti film bencana umumnya yang menampilkan secara visual segmen bencananya, The Midnight Sky mengambil sudut penceritaan yang berbeda. Bencana besar sudah terjadi 3 minggu lalu, begitu penjelasan teks di pembuka film. Kita pun tidak mengetahui seberapa besar skala bencana tersebut? Mengapa Augustine masih bisa tetap hidup? Berapa banyak umat manusia yang tersisa, ataukah Augustine adalah manusia terakhir di bumi? Kita tidak tahu ini semua secara pasti. Plot kisahnya memang tidak mengarah ke sini. Kisah filmnya justru secara bergantian menyajikan situasi awak kapal Ether dan usaha Augustine di bawah sana untuk berkomunikasi dengan mereka. Sederhana saja. Kejutan di akhir cerita, rasanya bukan kejutan lagi bagi penikmat film yang jeli. No surprise.

The Midnight Sky mengambil perspektif berbeda dari kelaziman genrenya, namun tidak untuk alur kisah dan pesannya. Untuk bujet produksi sebesar ini, wajar saja jika desain produksi dan pencapaian visualnya begitu megah dan mewah. Kastingnya pun jelas terlalu mapan untuk kisah sejenis ini. Film ini secara sederhana sebenarnya bicara tentang eksistensi kebahagiaan. Di hadapan bencana besar, seperti halnya pandemi global yang kita alami sekarang, segala sesuatu yang hilang dan berarti bagi kita, baru mulai kita pertanyakan dan renungkan.
