Tak banyak film olahraga yang bicara soal atlit renang terlebih sang tokoh sekaligus juga seorang pengungsi. The Swimmers adalah film biografi olahraga produksi Inggris yang diarahkan oleh Sally El-Hosaini. Film ini dibintangi oleh Nathalie Issa, Manal Issa, Ahmed Malek, dan aktor ternama Matthias Schweighöfer. Film berdurasi 134 menit ini dirilis oleh Netflix pada tanggal 23 November baru lalu. Lantas, apakah film bertema dan isu kuat ini mampu berbicara lebih?

We need to move forward

Kakak beradik Mardini, Yusra (Nathalie) dan Sara (Manal) adalah dua perenang handal dari Siria yang dilatih oleh ayah mereka sendiri. Mereka berlatih keras menuju Olimpiade mendatang di Rio, namun nasib berkata lain. Negara mereka dalam situasi perang sehingga terpaksa Sara dan Yusra harus mengungsi untuk menggapai impian mereka. Ditemani paman mereka, Nizar (Malek), akhirnya mereka berniat pergi ke Jerman. Perjalanan sebagai pengungsi tidaklah semudah yang mereka pikirkan. Bayang-bayang kematian setiap saat menghampiri yang membuat Olimpiade serasa jauh dari impian.

Satu catatan kuat film ini adalah visualisasi perjalanan para pengungsi. Walau banyak film termasuk dokumenter telah merekam hal yang sama, namun kini, dua sosok protagonisnya menjadi pembeda. Dua pemerannya (Issa Bersaudara) yang sungguhan merupakan kakak beradik membuat chemistry mereka sudah terjalin kuat dan emosional. Relasi dan kedekatan ini yang membuat kisahnya lebih terasa hidup di tengah suasana genting dan bahaya yang tak berujung. Walau arah plotnya bagi penikmat film tak sulit dibaca, namun tetap saja kisah perjalanannya terasa tak mengenakkan untuk ditonton.

Satu kekuatan lain adalah production value-nya. Setting dan pengadeganan dalam banyak adegannya jelas sulit untuk dibuat, namun film ini mampu menyajikannya dengan meyakinkan. Dari setting tempat latihan di Siria yang ditembak bom udara, perahu karet yang membawa mereka ke perairan Yunani, perbatasan dengan penjagaan ketat, kamp para pengungsi di Berlin, hingga venue olahraga renang Olimpiade Rio. Bagaimana mereka bisa menyajikan semua itu dengan begitu meyakinkan? Banyak diantaranya bisa jadi shot on location di beberapa lokasi yang mendekati aslinya, namun venue Olimpiade Rio? How? 

The Swimmers adalah film biopic yang mengagumkan melalui kisah perjalanan pengungsi lintas negara dan production value-nya, namun bukan yang terbaik di genrenya. Bukan ingin meremehkan beberapa visualisasi pengadeganan dalam film ini, namun ancaman bahaya dalam beberapa adegannya terasa kurang menggigit, pun ketika mereka berdua harus berenang di lautan lepas. Ada sesuatu yang hilang dan masih terasa bahwa kita menonton film dan tak mampu masuk ke dalam adegannya.

Juga ending-nya, satu babak kompetisi renang disajikan (entah kualifikasi atau final), namun seolah Yusra meraih kemenangan (medali emas). Faktanya tidak. Sejatinya, cukup shot Yusra yang tengah bersiaga dan kemudian bunyi peluit saja sudah cukup membuat ending yang dramatis. Partisipasinya dalam ajang Olimpiade adalah sudah merupakan kemenangan bagi negaranya dan para pengungsi yang diwakilinya.
