Apa yang terjadi jika satu sejarah atau peristiwa penting mendadak hilang dari muka bumi dan hanya kita seorang yang mengetahuinya. Ini sebuah bencana atau berkah bagi kita? Premis ini yang ingin diangkat oleh Yesterday. Bagaimana jika grup musik legendaris The Beatles, hanya dalam jentikan jari lenyap dari muka bumi ini, kecuali satu orang? Pada masanya, semua orang tahu siapa The Beatles, salah satu grup rock asal Liverpool, Inggris, yang populer tahun 1960-an – 1970-an, dan menghasilkan mahakarya melalui puluhan lagu-lagu mereka yang dikenang sepanjang masa.

Tak tanggung-tanggung, Yesterday diarahkan oleh sineas kawakan Danny Boyle, yang kita kenal melalui film-film besarnya, macam Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, 127 Days, hingga masterpiece-nya yang juga peraih Oscar, Slumdog Millionare. Film berbujet US$ 26 juta ini dibintangi beberapa aktor aktris ternama, yakni Himesh Patel, Lily James, Kate McKinnon, hingga musikus top, Ed Sheeran. Mampukah Yesterday mengikuti tren sukses komersial dan kritik Bohemian Rhapsody yang sama-sama mengangkat grup musik rock legendaris di eranya?

Alkisah Jack Malik adalah musikus kelas dua yang nasibnya kurang beruntung. Ellie, manajer serta juga sahabat Jack, selalu setia mendampingi dan mendukung di momen suka dan duka. Hingga suatu ketika, terjadi anomali di seluruh penjuru bumi yang mendadak selama 12 detik, listrik padam. Dalam kegelapan, Jack tertabrak bus, namun beruntung, ia hanya luka ringan. Setelahnya, sesuatu hal terjadi tanpa disadari Jack, semua orang tidak ada yang mengenal grup musik legendaris The Beatles, dan hanya ia seorang yang tahu lirik dan bisa memainkan lagu-lagunya.

Dengan premis yang demikian menarik, amat disayangkan pengembangan kisahnya terlalu lemah dan tak bisa disandingkan dengan musik-musik ikonik yang dilantunkan sepanjang filmnya. Siapa Jack dan mengapa harus dia? Lalu mengapa The Beatles? Jack diperlihatkan hanya tahu lagu-lagu The Beatles dan tidak terlihat memiliki kedekatan emosional dengan grup musik ini. Lirik Eleanor Rigby pun ia lupa. Hal ini yang membuat motivasi kisahnya lemah. Kita tahu, ini semua hanya menjadi kemasan cerita untuk menuturkan kisah roman antara Jack dan Ellie. Tak ada yang spesial di sini dan plot romannya pun terlalu familiar. Lagu-lagu The Beatles seolah hanya menjadi tempelan tanpa bisa membekas kuat. Tak ada jiwa di semua lagu-lagu yang dilantunkan. Grup musik atau musikus mana pun bisa berperan masuk dalam film ini.

Yesterday sesungguhnya memiliki premis dan potensi unik, namun pengembangan alur kisahnya terlalu umum untuk genrenya, tidak sepadan dengan lagu-lagu dan sejarah panjang grup band legendaris The Beatles. Sentuhan Boyle memang jelas tampak dalam film ini, seperti editing cepat, pergerakan kamera dinamis, kemiringan frame, hingga montage yang manis. Semua pencapaian estetik ini ini tak mampu mengangkat filmnya. Sebagai fans grup musik ini sejak kecil, saya kecewa berat. Siapa pun bisa menggantikan peran The Beatles tanpa ada substansi cerita (roman) yang berubah, bahkan Harry Potter sekalipun. Film drama roman musikal Across the Universe adalah satu contoh yang lebih baik, bagaimana musik The Beatles seharusnya diperlakukan.
