Beast Beast adalah film drama remaja arahan sineas independen Danny Madden. Naskah film ini diadaptasi dari film pendek berjudul Krista (2018) yang juga adalah garapan sang sineas. Film ini juga dibintangi oleh dua pemain film pendeknya sendiri, Shirley Chen dan Will Madden, dibantu oleh Jose Angeles. Tema senjata api kini tengah menjadi topik hangat di AS dikarenakan aksi penembakan yang marak terjadi dalam sebulan terakhir. Beast Beast menawarkan perspektif berbeda untuk subgenrenya dengan sosok karakter yang unik pula.

Protagonis kita adalah seorang keturunan Asia, Krista (Chen) seorang remaja SMU yang tinggal di wilayah pinggiran di wilayah selatan AS. Tetangga dekatnya, Adam (Madden) yang belum lama lulus SMU, terobsesi menjadi youtuber dengan konten senjata api yang menjadi hobinya. Nito (Angeles) adalah remaja keturunan latin yang baru saja pindah kota di mana ia satu sekolah dengan Krista. Krista memiliki hobi teater sementara Nito adalah seorang pemain skateboard yang handal. Satu peristiwa, akhirnya mendekatkan Krista dan Nito yang memang menyukai satu sama lain. Di saat bersamaan, usaha yang dilakukan Adam untuk menaikkan viewer-nya tak juga kunjung berhasil hingga Ia mencoba pendekatan berbeda. Satu peristiwa pun mengubah jalan hidup mereka bertiga.

Sejak awal, kita semua tahu bahwa kisah filmnya akan mengarah ke mana. Pesannya jelas. Tema sejenis, banyak ditemui dalam film-film sejenis sebelumnya, contoh paling sempurna adalah Elephant (2003). Naskahnya memang mampu mengecoh. Untuk sesaat kita seolah bakal diarahkan ke klimaks berupa penembakan brutal di sekolah Krista. Ternyata ini salah. Film ini mengambil jalan yang berbeda, sekalipun inti pesannya sama. Adalah babak ketiga yang membuat film ini menjadi di luar kelaziman dengan twist yang begitu mengejutkan. Sebuah balas dendam manis yang dilakukan dengan passion dan hati, yang rasanya baru ini disajikan genrenya. Sebuah katarsis dengan gaya berkelas sebagai resolusi.

Bermodal tema senjata api di AS, Beast Beast mengemasnya melalui kisah roman remaja dengan resolusi elegan. Walau hanya debutan, para pemainnya mampu tampil bagus, khususnya Chen dan Madden. Tidak seperti naskahnya, gaya pendekatan estetiknya tergolong biasa, namun lebih dari cukup untuk mengemas kisahnya. Kekuatan temanya sudah cukup untuk mengirimkan pesan sederhana. Bahwa senjata api tidak bisa dimiliki oleh semua orang. Film ini memberi gambaran jelas, bagaimana pun terampilnya seseorang, sisi mental dan emosional bisa berubah dalam waktu sekejap. Tidak habis pikir, apa yang tidak bisa dimengerti dari berbahayanya sebuah senjata api?
