Space Jam: A New Legacy adalah sekuel dari Space Jam (1996) yang dulu dibintangi pebasket legendaris Michael Jordan. Film ini merupakan kombinasi live-action, animasi 2D dan 3D yang disutradarai oleh Malcolm D. Lee. Film berbujet USD 150 juta ini dibintangi pebasket besar masa kini, Le Bron James, Don Cheadle, serta semua karakter besar Looney Tunes. Seperti kebanyakan film besar produksi Warner Bros. (WB) yang rilis tahun ini, A New Legacy juga dirilis bersamaan di bioskop maupun platform HBO MAX. Setelah 25 tahun dari seri pertamanya, apa yang mau ditawarkan film ini?

Al-G Rhythm (Cheadle), atau disingkat Al adalah sebuah artificial intellegence (AI) milik WB yang berlokasi di rubanah studio mereka. Pebasket Le Bron James ditawarkan pihak studio menjadi maskot dari produk canggih ini, namun ia menolaknya mentah-mentah. Al pun marah dan menarik Le Bron dan Dom, putranya, ke dunia digital. James sendiri tengah berseteru dengan sang putra karena Dom tak ingin mengikuti jejak karirnya sebagai pebasket, namun justru video game. Al yang melihat minat sang putra, membuat persaingan antara sang putra dan ayah untuk bermain dalam satu game pertandingan basket yang dibuat Dom. Sementara James harus mencari rekan tim untuk bermain, yang tak lain tak bukan adalah tim Looney Tunes.

Dari sisi kisahnya, rasanya tak banyak yang ditawarkan karena merupakan pengulangan versi aslinya 25 tahun lalu. Konfliknya sedikit memaksa dan yang terburuk adalah teramat mudah untuk diantisipasi kisahnya. Cerita memang bukan poin utama, namun adalah polah para Looney Tunes yang amat mencuri perhatian. Saya tidak tahu pasti, apa sosok kartun Looney Tunes masih populer untuk generasi milineal. Namun, saya menikmati polah mereka sebagai pembangkit rasa nostalgia tontonan masa cilik. Sementara untuk menarik penonton masa kini, pembuat film tak tanggung-tanggung menggunakan nyaris semua karakter dan film besar milik Studio WB, sejak era klasik hingga masa kini, sebut saja Casablanca, King Kong, superhero besar DC, Iron Giant, The Matrix, Mad Max, Game of Thrones, seri The Conjuring bahkan hingga aktor WB, Michael B. Jordan. Yah, mirip-mirip Ready Player One, hanya saja film ini tidak menggunakan mereka selain hanya tempelan sekejap saja.

Walau tak banyak yang ditawarkan dari sisi cerita, Space Jam: A New Legacy adalah film yang menghibur, penuh sensasi nostalgia dari Bugs Bunny dan kawan-kawan, serta tribute dari semua karakter ikonik studio Warner Bros. Satu-satunya hal yang menggairahkan semangat menonton film ini hanyalah para Looney Tunes. Sang bintang basket terbilang adalah bukanlah aktor film yang baik, walau ia sudah berusaha sekeras mungkin. Satu hal yang terasa konyol adalah promo sponsor yang belum pernah rasanya seekstrem ini, hingga sosok James kartun jatuh ke tanah dengan membuat lubang berbentuk logo Nike. Its oke, but its too much.
