The Block Island Sound is a unique mystery horror film directed by duo brothers Kevin and Matthew McManus. This 97-minute film stars unknown names, namely Chris Sheffield and Jim Cummings. This film was released by the Netflix platform a few days ago. Amid many quality independent horror films released earlier this year, this film offers a relatively fresh story for the genre.
The film located on a small tourist island in Rhode Island, USA, called Block Island. Harry found his father behaving strangely lately. At the same time, a strange anomaly occurred on the island. Hundreds of birds and fish died on the beach for no apparent reason. This incident caught the attention of an environmental agency who then sent Audry, Harry’s older sister, which come with her daughter. Meanwhile, his father’s weirdness was getting worse until one day; he disappeared without a trace.
Wow, what is this? Suddenly good horror films have appeared lately. Block Island presents not only a captivating panoramic beauty but also a compelling mystery horror story. The plotline is indeed slow, but it doesn’t reduce the mystery side without boring the audience. The plot is getting more intense and tense until it reaches a climax. It repeats the story like a “loop” through Harry to explain what happened to the father. We are immersed in suspense because of the real threat to the plot. However, I have no idea what happened. “I’m confuse”,, said Audry. Same. Whether this is a natural anomaly, supernatural, or something else is entirely unclear. This is the problem with the film.
The premise of horror is fresh, tense, and so terrifying, The Block Island Sound is only hampered by the film’s vague message. Not being able to be explained in the plot can mean a metaphor (symbol). It’s just that the clues in the story don’t point in one clear direction. Several things were mentioned in the plot, such as mental disorders, government experiments, and the electromagnetic effect of the hydropower propeller off the island’s coast. More extreme, this could also be a supernatural anomaly (evil spirits) or extraterrestrials (aliens) that kidnap living things on earth to study. Which one do you want to choose?
