Moral dilemmas occur in many moments in major films, from drama genres to even superheroes to science fiction. Difficult choices must be made that collide with the conscience or interests of many people, which lead to consequences, right and wrong. The God Committee provides a simple and perfect example of how moral dilemmas work in the medical field with a classy narrative style. This Austin Stark-directed drama film stars a series of old names, such as Kelsey Gramer, Julia Stiles, Jeneane Garofalo, Patricia R. Floyd, and Colman Domingo.
The story is simple. Three patients at a hospital needed heart transplants urgently. While the available organ is only one. A small committee is in a race against time, choosing between the three patients before the donor’s heart ceases to function. The small team consisted of a senior cardiologist and his potential successor, hospital officials, the head nurse, a psychologist, and a pastor. It is not an easy thing for them when the mental and physical aspects of the patient’s body, medical history, and money are the criteria for making decisions.
This film reminds a lot of the classic masterpiece, 12 Angry Men, whose story throughout the film is only set in the jury room where a lot of discussion takes place between them. The God Committee has a different approach with a unique non-linear narrative style. Tough talks took place in the meeting, but some scenes turned out to be indifferent time settings. Viewers may think the scene is simultaneously, but it’s not, and this is a big surprise. It was confusing at first, but as the story progressed, the audience seemed to understand it. The two moments alternately fill each other’s story information effectively in line with the plot. The script, including the dialogue, is indeed a rare achievement.
The exceptional script is also supported by the strong acting of the senior players. All the players on the committee team played above average. Julia Stiles (Dr Taylor), who became the main focus, played very well as the partner of the senior, Dr Boxer, played by Kelsey Grammer. There is not much comment about Garofalo’s impressive appearance. Even the head nurse (Floyd) to the priest (Domingo), who didn’t appear much, stole the attention through their appearance. There are hardly any weaknesses in this film from any side; it’s just that if the budget is more extensive or using first-class players, this film can compete at the highest level. For me, the visual tone of this film is more directed towards television than the big screen. Regardless, The God Committee is by far one of the best drama films of the year.
With the theme of strong moral dilemmas, The God Committee has a unique and solid script with stunning gameplay from the cast. This drama film works almost the same as a thriller that is interesting and intense. Films with moral themes like this can provide many lessons and reflections for those of us who watch. A difficult choice always has consequences. What or who will we sacrifice? Our human side as humans will always be disturbed by moral issues, which are right and wrong. Only time will tell.
