Puss in Boots: The Last Wish adalah sekuel dari Puss in Boots (2011) yang merupakan spin-off dari seri Shrek. Sekuelnya kini diarahkan oleh Joel Crawford yang juga mengarahkan The Croods: A New Age. The Last Wish masih dibintangi pengisi suara regulernya, yakni Antonio Banderas dan Salma Hayek, serta kini didampingi Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winston, John Mulaney, serta Harvey Guillén. Film pertamanya yang sukses komersial luar biasa serta diganjar nominasi Piala Oscar untuk animasi terbaik adalah capaian yang sulit ditandingi, benarkah?

Puss (Banderas) yang kini melegenda, harus menerima kenyataan, bahwa sembilan nyawa miliknya, hanya tersisa satu. Ancaman dari kematian memaksanya untuk meninggalkan semua atribut pahlawannya. Puss kini mencoba hidup tenang bersama Mama Luna yang memelihara puluhan kucing. Di sana, ia berkawan dengan seekor anjing yang menyamar menjadi kucing, Perrito (Guillén). Hingga suatu ketika, Goldilock (Pugh) bersama keluarga beruangnya, mencari Puss, untuk meminta bantuan mencuri peta menuju bintang jatuh yang bisa mewujudkan segala impian. Dengan harapan sembilan nyawanya kembali, Puss pun tak berpikir panjang untuk mengincar peta tersebut untuk dirinya sendiri. Selain si jahat, Jack Horner (Mulaney) pemilik peta yang juga mengincar hal yang sama, rekan lama Puss, Kitty (Hayek) juga berniat mendapatkannya.

Walau plotnya ringkas dan sederhana, namun kali ini ada yang berbeda dari sebelumnya. Temanya, kini terhitung gelap dan dekat dengan urusan kematian. Kematian pula yang mengincar sang protagonis dengan rasa takut yang tidak pernah ia rasakan sebelumnya. Walau aksi-aksinya jelas bisa diterima penonton anak-anak (yang mendominasi kursi bioskop ketika saya menonton), namun rasanya bukan untuk tema dan pesannya. Orang dewasa yang menonton, pasti bisa merasakan bahwa kisahnya adalah untuk mereka. Siapa sangka, film hiburan macam ini disisipi tema sedemikian suram. Walau tema dan pesan keluarga yang hangat pun diselipkan pula.

Di luar dugaan, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish tidak hanya menghibur segala usia, namun memiliki pesan tentang hidup yang rasanya hanya dipahami penonton dewasa. Untuk kedalaman temanya, The Last Wish adalah peningkatan besar dari film pertamanya. Tak perlu komentar banyak untuk visual dan pencapaian artistiknya. Standar film animasi sekarang sudah sulit dikatakan buruk. Namun untuk temanya, terhitung langka untuk film animasi populer sejenis. Beberapa film mengingatkan tema gelap/kematian yang sama, catat saja Toy Story 3, Coco, Soul, lalu belum lama ini, Pinocchio versi Del Toro. Film-film animasi ini jelas memberi sisi absurd, dimensi, dan eksplorasi yang berbeda karena visualisasi pengadeganan yang tak mampu dijangkau oleh film live-action. Wajar saja, jika The Last Wish masuk nominasi Golden Globe tahun 2023.
