After a comet releases a mysterious virus that begins to kill all the women in the world, a young couple hides out in their over-sterilized apartment trying to fight for their lives.

Walau sudah debut di ajang festival sejak tahun lalu, namun Only baru rilis pada bulan Maret ini dan secara kebetulan pula temanya pun tak jauh-jauh dari situasi kita sekarang. Entah ini disengaja atau tidak. Only adalah film drama bencana arahan Takaschi Doscher dengan dibintangi oleh Freida Pinto dan Leslie Odom Jr. Premisnya memang tergolong segar untuk genrenya, tinggal eksekusi kisahnya seperti apa yang mau ditawarkan.

Seluruh penjuru bumi tiba-tiba mengalami hujan abu misterius yang ternyata berdampak besar bagi kehidupan manusia. Hujan abu tersebut ternyata membawa virus. Anehnya, hanya perempuan yang bisa terinfeksi virus mematikan ini. Dalam sekejap saja, kaum hawa di muka bumi ini di ambang kepunahan. Akisah Eva, sejak day 1 telah dijaga oleh sang pacar, Will, sehingga ia tetap bisa hidup. Selama berminggu-minggu karantina, Eva dan Will menyaksikan dunia yang lambat laun berubah dan tidak lagi bersahabat. Tak ada perempuan, bermakna umat manusia bisa punah sehingga pemerintah pun memaksa perempuan yang tersisa untuk diisolasi.

Premisnya jelas sangat menarik. Only mengingatkan banyak pada film fiksi ilmiah Children of Men, di mana manusia diambang kepunahan setelah virus misterius membuat manusia tidak lagi bisa memiliki anak. Plotnya yang rada mirip tentu membawa kita berpikir ke level subteks (simbolik). Children of Men memang mengarah ke sini dengan mengumpakan sang ibu dan bayinya sebagai sosok juru selamat. Only seolah mengarahkan kita ke arah yang sama, terlebih nama tokohnya saja “EVA”. Seolah ia bakal menjadi satu-satunya perempuan di muka bumi yang mampu memberikan jalan bagi kelangsungan eksistensi manusia. Ternyata asumsi ini terlalu jauh. Film ini tidak sekompleks dan sedalam yang diduga.

Premis yang menarik, diikuti pula oleh struktur kisahnya yang didominasi kilas balik. Melalui struktur plot ini, terlihat satu motif yang berkesan akan membawa kita ke sebuah kejutan besar. Lagi-lagi, saya salah besar. Premis dan struktur plot yang sudah demikian menarik tidak mampu memberikan eksekusi akhir yang subtil seperti yang dijanjikan premisnya. Lalu untuk apa pengorbanan dan penderitaan selama itu? Dalam satu momen, alur kisahnya tampak sekali memaksa dan tak logis. Coba bayangkan, jika perempuan tersisa hanya segelintir saja di muka bumi ini dan siapa pun bakal mendapat hadiah jutaan dollar bagi yang menemukan mereka. Jika ini adik, pacar, atau istrimu, sebaik apapun ia menyamar (laki-laki), akankah kamu membawanya masuk ke sebuah rumah makan yang dipenuhi laki-laki? Are you stupid or what?

Di awali premis menarik dengan struktur kilas-baliknya, Only ternyata tidak mampu menawarkan cerita maupun pesan yang menggugah. Sayang sekali, pembuat film tak mampu memaksimalkan naskah beride brilian ini. Jika hanya ingin bicara soal loyalitas, dedikasi, atau problem komunikasi, ini terlalu kerdil jika dibandingkan ide dan konsep besarnya. Selain Children of Men, Blindness adalah satu contoh yang brilian ketika wabah membuat seluruh umat manusia kehilangan indera penglihatan mereka, atau film bencana unik, The Happening, ketika alam memaksa umat manusia untuk mengakhiri hidup dengan segera. Film bagus akan mampu menyalurkan ide besarnya melalui konsep naskah dan visualnya sehingga mampu menyampaikan pesannya dengan cara yang elegan.
